The Department is focused on teaching and research in domains like Machine Learning, Data Mining, Computer Networks and Security, High Performance Computing, Hardware Software Co-design, Image Processing and Cloud Computing. Expertise of faculty members in various thrust areas has attracted funded research projects from various funding agencies like DST, BRNS – DAE, ISRO, GUJCOST and more.

A number of research publications viz; journal and conference papers/ book chapters/ technical articles at National and International level add to the credit of the Department.

The strength of the Department lies in the offering of consultancy and custom training programmes in the areas of Machine Learning, Data Mining, IoT and Networking, Website and Mobile Application Development, Software Quality Assurance, High Performance Computing, Cyber Security and Learning Management Systems. The Department has conducted many of such training programs for SAC-ISRO Ahmedabad, INS Valsura and other academic institutions.

Interdisciplinary Areas 

With Industry 4.0, the focus is on Big Data, IoT and Automation in all industries. It is then imperative that interdisciplinary areas be explored for applications of computer science and engineering. One such area is Cyber Physical Systems where joint research projects are undertaken with the Electronics and Communication Engineering and Instrumentation and Control Engineering departments. The Department is also engaged actively in collaborative projects with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute of Plasma Research for research in the domain of High Performance Computing and Applications. Extensive research in collaboration with the Institute of Science is being conducted in Genomics, Geo-informatics, Bio-informatics and more.
